I’ll spare you the “I’m back” post.
I read an assumptive and overly self-confident review of Mates of State’s new album on Pitchfork yesterday. I always wonder how they staff magazines like that, because true music lovers see great in all sides of the art. It can be simple, repetitive, and poppy… as long as it’s inventive and unique it’s totally worth it.
The audacity to try and box Mates of State into a category is foolish of them. Mates’ new album is worth a listen. It breaches some Mates conventions but holds true to their style and feel. Their charm echoes kind of what you get with Stars’ romanticized indie rock love dialogues.
These two cuts are floating around online and both are quite good. You make your judgments as you see fit, but I think it’s just as fresh as any Mates of State offering as we’ve ever seen.
Ultimately, they just need to cheer up. Mates have a new album and that’s good enough for me.
