Talking with one of my buddies about his band, I think I realized more about my music tastes. I was giving him a bit of opinion about his music and what I thought it was that made it lesser than it could be.
It was the vocals.
They’re such a make/breaker for me. When you’re in a rock band, your vocals gotta sound rock. Sometimes, musicians try to bring that refined and trained voice into the wrong genre of music. It detracts from the overall feel. You don’t put pink wallpaper in your son’s room… it’s not in sync (well some kids are into that).
So when it comes to vocals, I can get on board if a band is willing to forge their own path. Whether Bob Dylan, Iron and WIne, or The Grand Archives.
This song is a good example. Different sound, but it just works for their music.
